Debriefing the Alpha Male - Part One
Hello, My name is Stormee, and I’m an investigative interviewer for Between the Lines. Or, at least I would be, if I were a real person. The way I see it, I may not walk in your world, but mine is better anyway. Here I can be whatever I choose. And, for now, I choose to do a little investigative research on the illusive Alpha Male.
I’ve been told that there are numerous writers on your side of the page who’d love to hire me to do their personal research on this specimen. Well, follow along. This is sure to get interesting.
Now, let’s see what my notes say so far.
Alpha Males make wonderful heroes because we perceive them as being bigger-than-life characters. They project that image through personality. They are risk-takers, adventurous, heroic, and powerful. No wonder women become soft as putty when this guy is around.
On the other hand, they can give authors a headache. Why? Because often they resist admitting their softer feelings, become extremely macho, uncommunicative, and hard to hold in one place.
Whew! As authors, why bother with such an unmanageable character? The paramount reason is that, on first contact, women love to hate them, giving us instant conflict with which to engage our readers. Female protagonist become obsessed with the dangerous game of taming the beast. How far will he allow her to go? How much control will he give her? Can she claim his heart?
In order to make this man her own, she will have to understand him, learn to trust him, and surrender into his keeping her whole heart and soul. He will accept no less from her, because he gives the same, loving only once...for keeps.
What is his background? What does he love or hate? Who are his friends? What
kind of work does he prefer? I’ll be finding the answers to these questions as
I track my subject.
I’ve spent weeks deciding which Alpha to study. I’ve
chosen the notorious Dirk Savage.
I don't know about you, but I'm a little nervous. I think I'll put on my
thick-skinned outfit, the one with the extra-strong, heart shield. If you're smart, you’ll follow my lead. The man is Alpha to the core, and
I happen to know he’s looking for a mate…
