WRDF Review of Winter's Journey by Kathryn Meyer Griffith

6/7/08

Title: Winter's Journey

Author: Kathryn Meyer Griffith,

Genre: Suspenseful romance,

Length: approx. 75,000 words,

Publisher: The Wild Rose Press

When I started reading this novel I was concerned that I would find it difficult to identify with the heroine Loretta Brennan. A female truck driver is as far removed from my experience as it is possible to get. However within the first two pages I was hooked.

Blurb

A widowed single mum, Loretta is struggling to make ends meet and save her home and the truck that she and her husband bought together. She is given the opportunity to take on a job with a tight deadline, delivering a load to Wyoming. The situation is aggravated by the fact that the route is icy and snow covered and that it was on this same route that her husband died. Loretta picks up a hitchhiker and the suspense builds when they are trailed by a series of murders and there are threats against her life. Is her hitchhiker a murderer or the love of her life? Or both? Of course you have to read the book to find out.

Review

I loved it. Ms Griffith has just the right touch when setting the background and showing the relationship with secondary characters. She seamlessly blends the growing romance with the suspense, making it truly nail biting. The genre almost always guarantees a happy ending, but her story telling is so good, there were moments when I wondered how this was going to happen.

All of this is set against the original context of the route to Wyoming- she gave me a realistic vision of the cold and the struggle of truck drivers against the weather.

Ms Griffith proves that it is possible to write a thoroughly good story and develop an engaging and believable romance without filling the pages with sex scenes.

A fantastic read, this definitely stays on my shelf.

The review caught my attention because the heroine is a truck driver, which is very unique for a book. My dad, his brother, and a cousin in my family were truck drivers. Throw in a mystery, and I'm ready to read it.
